Description
The escape of the Brigantine Aris from the Bay of Navarino is one of the most heroic and moving incidents of the naval struggle during the Greek Revolution of 1821. After a long battle and thanks to the heroic courage of the commander and his crew, who had an icon of the Virgin Mary on the deck, another glorious page in the history of the Greek navy was written. Every year on the anniversary, prayers are held at the Church of Transfiguration of the Christ inside the castle of Pylos and speeches given reflecting the historical importance of the events that took place on April 26, 1825. Afterwards, the people embark on boats from Pylos harbour and sail to the monuments of the deceased heroes Stavros D. Sachinis, Anastasios D. Tsamadou, Ch. Anagnostaras and the Italian philhellene Santoro di Santaroza. A short memorial service takes place with the laying of wreaths.
