Description
Medical research has shown that the Mediterranean Diet greatly contributes to improved health, longevity and heart disease prevention.
In recognition of these benefits, the UNESCO Mediterranean Diet network was established on the 16th of November 2010. The emblematic communities of Koroni in Greece, Soria in Spain, Cilento in Italy and Chefchaouen in Morocco were inaugurated as ‘emblems’ through the Charter of Chefchaouen.
The idea was to highlight the regions and cultures shared by the people living around the Mediterranean basin. The Mediterranean Diet is a complete and multi-dimensional object, comprising the rural landscape, climate and terrain, local agricultural products, production methods, eating habits, basically all aspects of social life, culture, and practical traditions.
Koroni’s selection was not by chance. It harmoniously combines local food products with tradition and history. It is an area rich in agricultural products, dominated by its fine quality olive oil and “Koroneiki” olives. The Municipality of Pylos-Nestoros is known worldwide for not only its edible olives but also its fine wines, raisins, and a wide variety of herbs and aromatic plants. These fresh local ingredients, combined with our traditional way of cultivation, faith in age old customs and our time-honoured way of cooking made Koroni’s selection as the Greek Emblematic Community a natural choice.
The original four emblematic communities chosen by UNESCO have since been joined by communities in Croatia, Cyprus and Portugal. The Municipality of Pylos-Nestoros, in close collaboration with the Maniatakeion Foundation, is proud to implement this grand program and every summer organizes a three-day festival dedicated to the Mediterranean Diet. Under the auspices of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food and the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, Culture and Sport the whole community comes together to celebrate and to share our heritage and customs with visitors from around the world.
