Description
Every year, on the 30th of April, there is a celebration in honour of the Battle of Methoni. Andreas Miaoulis, Admiral of the Greek Fleet overcame and destroyed, despite the limited resources available, the Egyptian fleet on 30 April 1825, thus proving the ability and the courage of the Greek people.
The event begins at Gregorios Episkopos Square, where a memorial service is held at the monument to celebrate and honour the Fallen.
With the accompaniment of the Municipal Philharmonic Orchestra of Pylos-Nestor there is a procession to the Methoni Cultural Centre, where the ceremony continues with the young school pupils of the region and members of the Cultural Association of Methoni who recite poems and sing songs from that time. The event closes with a reconstruction of the burning of the Egyptian fleet on the beach with its stunning backdrop of Methoni Castle.
